Mediation are great and they are hip but they are the first step in what you write here. They discipline us to untangle one thought, one emotion at a time without getting overwhelmed. I would couldn’t agree more with you the one person you should know is yourself. We often do not know ourselves we adopt what we see and become this and that or that, all in pursuit of happiness. Sitting still being alone allows for that reflection but for that we perhaps have to develop inner calm. To talk to the person inside of us and ask tell me what do you feel and why. Acknowledge all our emotions and accept they have a purpose. The purpose to experience life in its fullest with all its emotions and everything else that follows. As always so eloquently put.
